The launch of the PlayStation Portal by Sony raised high expectations, but the first tests show that it is not suitable for every gamer. Engadget expresses disappointment with the "fickle" device. Despite an impressive battery life, you can't always rely on stable operation even in the best WLAN network. The lack of Bluetooth is seen as a drawback, as it limits the choice of headsets.
GamePro from Germany is somewhat more positive and emphasizes the possibility of using the PlayStation Portal on the go. Nevertheless, a powerful home network and a high bandwidth on site are required to ensure a smooth gaming experience.
Polygon puts it in a nutshell: "The PlayStation Portal is suitable for a small circle of players. The high price of over 200 euros is viewed critically, especially when it is only a matter of not connecting a Bluetooth controller to the smartphone.
Kotaku, on the other hand, sees the PlayStation Portal as a solid overall package for its price. Families in particular who want to keep the TV free could benefit from it.
IGN is more positive than other magazines and reports good experiences, even in public WLANs. However, practical suitability remains to be seen.
The Verge points out that not all games are equally suitable for the PlayStation Portal. There are also too few differences to playing on mobile devices with controllers such as the Backbone One. The high price is criticized in relation to the limited range of applications.
TechRadar, on the other hand, is almost euphoric and sees the PlayStation Portal as the ideal device for a niche market. Sony offers the best remote play option with excellent ergonomics. It is only not recommended if you want to play games locally or via cloud gaming.
The PlayStation Portal from Sony polarizes in the tests. Whether it justifies the high price depends on individual needs and expectations. For die-hard PS5 fans, it could be an interesting, albeit expensive, gadget. Everyone else will probably do without it.
